I picked up one of the phased-out G3 iBooks and
installed woody successfully by using the
"Booting from the hard disk" method. (The CD
wouldn't boot) I've added all the text-based and
command line tools that I like and would now like
to try getting KDE running.

In late 2002, I set up and customized conferencing[1] software on
Debian GNU/Linux 3, an old PPC 7600 and with much help from folks on

What on the PPC architecture corresponds to syslinux on the x86?
I've looked at the scripts for bootcd and wonder if it might easily
be adapted to the PPC.

I've been trying this on a running system, perhaps that's why tar
doesn't work. I guess I could try the restore after booting from a
floppy disk instead when using an old world macintosh.
However, I'd like to avoid a boot-disk dependent method because the

Chris,
I do insert the floppy before booting, but it goes unrecognized
unless I use the cmd-opt-p-r key combination after the reboot chord.
It would be normal to expect it to eject a non-bootable disk, but
I've never seen the machine eject the disk except as part of the net

What is the recommended best practice for backing up and restoring an
entire server - data, applications and all?
I've tried tarring /, the same method I've used for data, but the
machine (woody) doesn't boot after I un-tar it.

I've figured out either the answer or a superstitious work around.
If this is not "forcing" a boot from floppy, then it might be nice to
link to an explanation or explain in the manual itself what is really
happening.
The 7600 I have won't boot from the floppy unless cmd-opt-p-r

Hi,
First, what key sequence must one use to force a boot from floppy on
an old-world macintosh? (and which of fn/ctrl/alt/"apple")

Second, it would be really nice to have this information in the
installation manual. It could fit in section 5.3 "Booting from
I've gotten KTH (Heimdal) kerberos up and running on an old world
macintosh running woody and would like to begin to integrate LDAP.
I've no preference Heimdal or MIT kerberos, which ever integrates
better. I would like tips, suggestions, or recommended reading for
how to do proceed.
So far,
I've installed Netatalk on woody today and wonder where failed login
attempts are stored. Successful logins end up in /var/log/messages.
Cheers,

I would like to do a fresh install, but record all the packages I
currently have. How do I get a clean list of packages without
truncated package names and without all the crud that dpkg -l
produces?

Great! That will be good to have in the manual. I see the reference in
the mac-fdisk man page, but that's only available once the system is up
and running. The man page for the regular fdisk was missing that tip.

Any suggestion how do I get a PowerMacintosh 7600/132 to boot from CD?
Section 5.2 of the installation manual (woody) suggests holding
command, option, shift, and delete while starting up. This doesn't seem to
work for me.
