I can answer this one (having just trodden the same path).
Go into open firmware (Apple-Alt-O-F at boot) and type:
boot cd:,\\yaboot
and you'll be there. The imac is apparently too new for the CD.

Solved that one - the boot sequence didn't seem to like me having a USB

Thank you. Progress! That gets Debian booted but it seems to have
trouble finding the keyboard (at least I assume that's the problem). It
is of course a USB keyboard.
