There is an NV setting that can make the function keys behave normally (and you use Fn for brightness). If you have MacOS bootable, you can change it with the keyboard control panel. If not, it is probably accessible from Linux, but I don't know how to parse the NV memory. David Brown

try headphones in the headphone jack to see if anything is coming out there. I tried several mixer programs, and the only one that seemed to work was kmix. Unfortunately, that uses non-free qt. If nothing else works, you could make a small program that issues a mixer ioctl to turn up the volume. David Brown
