I don't remember any PowerPC Macs that wouldn't allow me to enter Open
Firmware. (The early beige series machines, G3 and below, sent the
output to serial port, not screen, by default. It was possible to
change once you got there.)

give you a screen with various options for booting. One of them may be useful.

If the cd is stuck in the CD drive that's internal to your G4 you should be
able to boot to Open Firmware and use the following command at the OF prompt.

I tried several methods to boot on Knoppix from usbstick or CD from USB-CD,
but the laptop seems not to be able to boot
