Now with the device running and initialized I get a lot of logging to my syslog file with:

HP inkjet (HP940c)? I tried the one recommended by linuxprinting and it
didn't work. The New HP Inkjet driver included with cup-sys gives dark,
muddy print-outs with o ften bad registration and so-so font support.
