Hi. I had a crash on my laptop while running apt-get install.
The main problem seems to be some minor filesystem corruption,
concerning mainly the packages:
libglib1.2-dev
fdutils
fftw2
The error message I get is basically:
install-info: failed to lock dir for editing! No such file or directory
Okay, so I read the doc I was told to, followed the instructions, and I now
have this error message:
poet:/usr/src# dpkg -i kernel-image-2.2.19_custom.2.2.19g_powerpc.deb
(Reading database ... 57558 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking kernel-image-2.2.19 (from
kernel-image-2.2.

Of course not, why would I read that? :-D
I still think there should be a dialog about this...okay, I'll read it. :-)

Well, it works! I got the Pristine 2.2.19 kernel from kernel.org to compile,
and modules, and everthing! Of course, it's not all good: the tdfx module has
symbol problems, even though it's present in the config and seems to compile
and be installed in /lib/modules/2.2.19/misc/tdfx.o...which is n
I was looking at the update-excuses page and noticed a lot of
unremarkable packages are apparently out of date on powerpc, many of
them have the exact same failure:

Hi,
here to tell you about the lastest kernel (benh´s tree via rsync) I
installed on my Beige G3:
1) Aparently fixed the problems with the BMAC Ethernet (see "dropped network
connection" thread). It´s already up for 33 minutes (laughable, but 2.2.19
kept up for 5 minutes max).
2) Fixed the au
I have exactly the same problem. Exact same hardware configuration. Kernel
2.2.19 tho. I just built a 2.4.5 and gonna see if it fixes it (will know for
sure, because mine "gives up networking" every 2-10 minutes.).
For now what I do (in despair, because the machine is near-production
website) is ad
This is a hardware problem with the built-in ethernet (I had the same
problem with a beige G3 233MHz running LinuxPPC about a year ago).
Here is what Apple has to say:
