i was wrong. My main concern was just getting this feature.
I apologize for the mistake.
BTW, wrong thread. And why doesn't anyone have anything to say
about my proposal?

Package: debian-policy
Version: 3.2.1.0
Severity: normal
Let me start by saying that i am not in any way attached to this
specific amendment to policy. What i would like is to be able to
cause the files that are normally placed in the parent directory
while building a package to be placed instead
need to be modified. It
doesn't support a build directory at the moment. I describe the
'-o' option in this patch, but i am not attached to that
particular one.

Eh? It isn't. The user *told* dpkg to do this by setting the
variable.

Progeny
st have dpkg override that final parameter
with $DEB_BUILD_DIR? If someone sets this variable, they clearly
want the files to go there and not '..'.

. If it isn't, they
will continue their current behavior of dropping them in the
parent directory.
I know nothing about the internals of these programs, but it
seems like a fairly simple change. I would be willing to
volunteer some time for this, if necessary.
