Wrong answer. :-)
The ease of installation wouldn't change a bit that way (you could
still dpkg --install as before), what would really change is the
source of non-free existance information, which should be our least
problem.

and even if we stopped building precompiled debs of non-free software,
we couldn't stop others (and companies) from doing it.
So, how could we make non-free software hidden, or harder to install?

It's sad, but every non-free piece of software has its disadvantages

7;ll be happy nevertheless.
My concern, as a developer, is that Debian commits to non-free
software beyond what is acceptable, by me, and by other people who'd
rather be as free as possible from any non-free software association.
So I'd like to know how big this commitment really is, an
to go in its involvement with non-free software.
As ever, it's not very exciting to realize that what you actually do
doesn't match what you expected to, so better know it before engaging
yourself.

if gimp-non-free was really non-free software, I
think we should not suggest it in any way from main, even if that was
the only available way to use TIFF or GIF. This isn't the case,
however.

something like that, you get the picture. :-).

Make is `Installed-Size: 305', it's standard and depends just on
libc.
I think it's not a big requirement to have it installed on a machine
that certainly has at least one of the emacsen on its disks.

Have a look at Debian GNU/Linux: <http://www.debian.org/>.
Debian is the free operating s
m that can do this as well.
Maybe we should either state clearly in the policy that update-menus
has to be mandatorily called from postrm (i.e., it's behavior may
change in the future and stop working if called from prerm), or allow
calling it from prerm in lintian.

No thanks, I don't have very much free time now, better wait for the new
emacs19, before I start playing with it (I have no spare machines handy
and I have to use Emacs every day).

(Since this means users will have to put a require form in their .emacs,
those package should tell'em about it in README.Debian. System
Administrators willing to load by default this sort of package could put a

It isn't against FSSTND and I think we'll have to do it anyway, when we'll
switch from FSSTND to FHS.
