Practically every viewer and server can handle gzipped files. Where
things break down is in following links. Not all viewer/servers will
try foo.g
Many years ago, the override files didn't include all packages. Ian
and I changed it for a number of reasons:
A common override file allows some consistency in the archive because
a small group of people can set sections and priorities. It allows
new packages to be checked before they are placed
