Um, don't know. I'm wondering whether you needed to load the module with
further options or possibly load further modules. Are you familiar with
this?:

You appear to have ALSA configured. Also check using
$ ps fax
that you have no instances of artsd or esd blocking the soundcard.

And it should work, sometimes I have found I have to reboot before it all
clicks into place.

n your soundcard you should be able to achieve this using a mixer
utility. alsamixergui mentions the word 'mono' on a couple of the sliders.
Whether this actually does anything useful is another matter. Also worth
trying gamix or the GNOME mixer if you have it on board.
