It would be best to help out the GNOME team rather than adopting
orphaned packages, unless there is some orphaned package that you use
and want to stay in Debian.

To help you learn and refine your packages (and it was your request)
is a good idea see a packaging made by you. Not an orphan.
You can choose any code, no mattering if you will submit to Debian or not.
