You could try just doing what gbp import-orig does manually. E.g.:
- unpack the tarball
- git checkout --orphan temp
- git add . && git commit -m "import upstream version 1.2.3"
- git tag 1.2.3 (or upstream/1.2.3 if that's your convention)
- git checkout master && git branch -D temp
- git
