well, i've tried everything that's been suggested to no avail.
but i did notice something interesting, the -4 also has only two md5sums.
and perhaps even wierder, doogie from irc was able to login to my box and
build it in his home dir with no problems. looked at his history file, and

Try just "build" which builds everything. You may not want to
continue doing it this way, but you will at least see which steps are
involved.
