if you've tried xdriver=vesa and it did not work, then it's not a live
specific problem, but an 'upstream'

Thanks for the note. Some questions. If the bootloader gets the
setting right, why can't the rest of the code get it right? In both
cases, the video has to be set up correctly to work. I realize that the
xorg code is being used for display, but it still seems illogical that

Thanks for the link. I can't use the 2 GB iso as one computer has only
a CD drive, and the DVD drive in the other is suspect. I used the boot
iso and it boots. This is fine to do an installation, but not I need a
livecd that has a graphical GUI.

I have created a live system for Swiss schools (based on Debian Live) that
includes several generations of proprietary drivers for ATI and NVIDIA cards.

How do I get to the root terminal. X starts automatically unless there
is a cheat code I didn't find. Once X starts, the screen goes black, so

TNT2 - use 'nv' driver - the proprietary ones just won't work.

If all else fails use vesa driver for both.
Try manually configuring xorg.conf:
From root terminal:
X --configure
then follow the instructions it gives you
