Hello,
I am trying to boot a live version of GParted on a USB stick on an HP
notebook.
I get the screen with the GParted selections and the CD's on the
background. When I select the default option I get a boot failure. The

Gparted is a fine partition tool for general work but don't use it for
this sort of job.
Use cfdisk instead.

But if I start GParted to modify partitions, it doesn't see main
partition at all, only the tiny one. GParted claims that USB-stick
has:

Although this image is based on debian-live, it is not made by the

The manual says to use gparted to access the space left on a USB key after
copying the live image.
Is this the same as using fdisk to add a type 83 partition (e.g. sda2) to the
device and creating an ext2 filesystem on it?
