'dotfiles'? do you mean to the hidden files which their name begin with a
dot? if yes, so I've noticed that when I'm trying to access the
.Xauthority file

Recently, without any apparent reason, when I login to the XFCE4 desktop,
the mouse doesn't respond.
the strange thing is that if I boot the system without the 'persistence'
parameter, the mouse works fine.
any idea what's the problem?

so it must be something in your dotfiles then, you can try to "bisect"
them, or if you don't consider them valuable, just remove them.
