I experienced the same problem of no default userid and unable to log in to
live using the remastersys script. I am using debian squeeze. Downgrading
passwd and live-initramfs to stable fixed my problem, and everything worked ok.
I first tried downgrading only passwd to stable -- I got a diff

you can include thirdparty repositories through config/chroot_sources
mechanism, pinning through config/chroot_apt/preferences remains the same.
