I'm quite a happy Thinkpad user -- that said, I'm sure you can come up with a
HP-compatible solution. I've run Knoppix on a Pavillion (different model) with
no touchpad issues.

ease consider filing a bug with Ubuntu's bugtracker
(bugzilla.ubuntu.com). There don't appear to be any bugs filed against
Ubuntu's whereami package yet...if it's apparent that Ubuntu hasn't introduced
the bug into the package, Debian can begin fixing it.

actually run the app (they can automatically change modes only for
certain chipsets...I forget which). With my ath-based D-Link card, I do the
following:
$ sudo iwconfig ath0 mode monitor
$ kismet
My kernel:
$ uname -r
2.6.10-5-386
