To install Debian on my Satellite Pro 4260 I downloaded the files to
boot the install from dos. That works, but I can't boot from a kernel
that I have compiled.
The files you need to start an install from dos are:
install.bat, base2_2.tgz, drivers.tgz, linux, and loadlin.exe

Aaron,
I have a 4200 with Debian Potato and the sound works great. As far as I know we
have the same sound hardware. I installed sound support using ALSA modules which
I complied myself without incident. The modules I have installed are:

David,
You can try the S3 ftp site [1] which has an X driver for the Savage/IX
chip. I got the SVGA X server on my Toshiba to work with the same
graphics chip using the server found here [2]. I'm not sure which is
better, as I didn't know of the S3 ftp site when I was setting up X.

Try turning off gpm. I have and similar troubles on my Toshiba with gmp
autoloading on boot. I believe that there is a irq conflict of some kind, but
I never really got that involved in trying to figure out why it wouldn't work.

The official Debian wmacpi does not support the newer ACPI patches. The
upstream wmacpi does, and I have packaged it and made it available via apt
at:
deb http://linux.bb/debian ./
