Dear All
I'm running Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 on an IBM Thinkpad A31p.
X is in VESA mode, as the Thinkpad has unsupported Radeon video.
If I'm in X (Gnome) and I'm idle for a while (10 mins?) X crashes. The
error messages seem to be to do with trying to run a screensaver. Now,

My boot up takes me to the console, where I login and start up X with
'startx'. I prefer it like this: I have not installed [gkx]dm or the X

I had a perfectly good Apache installation; broke it (by accident) and
hacked a fix. But I'd like to know what happened and how to fix it

The error I was getting is:

Thanks for all comments.
Downloading the XFree86 4.2 from the Net is not feasible for me, as I have
only a 56k modem. I had a go building the source code (which I have from a
magazine coverCD): this went well until I tried 'startx' and was told,
"/usr/X11/startx: no such file or directory". Inter

Dear all
Thanks for earlier comments on this. I installed Alsa and tried a few
things. Sound still not working. Below are some messages from my machine

The quest continues. Alsa is still not working, but my hunch now is that
for some reason the new kernel and alsa modules are not being accepted into
the system - which behaves as if it's running with the old kernel. Briefly,

I have indeed been running bf24 all this time. I hadn't been updating LILO
during kernel installation. The reason for this omission is that the
dpkg -i dialogs didn't seem to be giving me an option to avoid installing
lilo into the MBR (I have another OS hoggin

Dear All,
When I compile a new kernel, my modules disappear.
Before, I have a fairly normal selection of modules:
After, nothing:
To compile the kernel, I follow instructions (e.g. from
/usr/share/doc/kernel-source-2.4.18/debian.README), like this:
# mv /lib/modules/2.4.18 /lib/modules/2.4
