Try the pcmcia-source package. It has the modules and everything set
for compiling.

Did you say you compiled the kernel yourself? You probably forgot to
compile the modules.
Go to the kernel source tree and say:
make modules modules_install

Did you actually install them with dpkg -i file.deb?

Hi, did you try this?
update-modules ; depmod -a ; /etc/init.d/pcmcia start
This might solve -- or might not.

So, is this a known problem? A bug? Did I do something wrong?

Well, it is documented that you have to recompile them, but I
couldn't recompile with make-kpkg, could you?

Why aren't there /dev files for PCMCIA devices on Linux
yet? Can anybody explain?
I'm making a program which shows the stats of the PCMCIA
cards, and it has to be SUID just because of that :(

very simple...
card "Card Name"
manfid xxx, xxx(the same as cardctl output)
bind "driver"
There are other things you can put instead of manfid,
but this is the most straightforward method and easiest to do.
manfid, AFAIK, is a number distinct for each card.

Mine is a NeoMagic MagicMedia 256AV, Dell Inspiron 3500. Do you want it?
I use the SVGA driver, though.
