The only shrinking of lifetime is due to the rebooting.
Depending on your drive it has (for instance) 10 MTBF.
Every reboot costs you an hour (rule of thumb) if the harddrive spins
down before rebooting.
Other than that I would not worry, and a few reboots won't break your
disc either.

Sleeping is an ACPI feature. Maybe your LID event doesn't get processed.
Look into how to configure ACPI for you laptop. I can't really help with

should just work with pcnet_cs no strings attached. However, when I
configure the network after having configured PCMCIA, it says the network

1600, and pcmcia will not work during the installation process. Usually it
comes up after rebooting, but I never found out why.
Another quirk is that the "discover" package seems to interfere with
pcmcia on my laptop.
