i reinstalled it, not using grub (as default) but using lilo. it works!!

Sorry that it took me so long to reply,
I just threw 2.6.11.9 in and voila - problems solved. My USB mouse even
works again. So I guess 2.6.11.8 just didn' like me (and vica versa, I
can tell you :)
Well at least now I know more about the sound setup in Linux :)

Dell Inspiron 3800. This is the kernel from the default install, not
specialized.
