Hi. Since I jumped into the fray, I figure an update is appropriate.
I found that I did not install the alsa-modules package, just the alsa
applications. Installing these under 2.4.24, alsaconf sees the i810
card now, which is an improvement, but it still doesn't work.
What did start working is
At last, I found the documentation suggested by Mr. Tartler below. One
of the things not included in Mr. Tartler's selection from the text is
that the "TLS libraries" cannot be linked under 2.4, but must be linked
under 2.6.

I've used a Knoppix 3.3 CDROM to install debian testing on a Dell
Latitiude D600, by doing a
sudo knoppix-installer
from a terminal window, after booting from the CDROM.
The result is a debian testing installation, using LILO as the boot
loader.
The kernel installed by Knoppix is called

i'm trying to install debian on a acer 1454lmi
laptop with a radeon 9200 mobile vga
it goes all normally until i type bf24 then the
screen start flashing but the install keeps running
and the screen is flashing on/off is there a
workaround for this problem ???
any help would be
