I have a quick question that I am hoping you are
able to help me with.
I am trying to install a modem on a friends Windows
98SE machine, when it gets to the COMFIX part, it performs an illegal
operation.
If you are able to help me fix this it would be

Sounds promissing... I'll give it a go this weekend since I kind of have
to use my laptop today :-)

This is a kind of common problem on laptops, the quick fix is to disable
framebuffer at boot. Just give video=vga16:off as an option to the kernel.
