Hi I just installed debian on my dell inspiron 7500
It is coexisting with NT.
I can boot from the floppy just fine, but when i try to boot from the
hard disk it get to start lilo but hangs at this point

One tiny flamedon't assume just because someone has installed Debian and
Lilo that they have access to the documentation and man pages. ;-)
Running on the theory that it might help speed up my Pentium II system
(debatable, but that's beside the point), I've tried
recompiling a selection of packages with pentium optimisation, downloading
the debian source and running `./debian/rules binary`.
However, after having done this, every time

i just installed potato on my new vaio, and most stuff works pretty fine
so far. but "halt -p"/poweroff does not power down the machine, the last
message is something like "power down", and then the machine keeps running
in that state. any black magic i forgot to apply?
