When you choose linux at boot time, append the "video=vga16:off" after
linux, like:
boot: Linux video=vga16:off
Then if you haven't installed x-window-system, you'll get the console.
Log in, and edit the /etc/lilo.conf file:
there is a line:
# append=""
after that write:
append="video=vga16:off"

I have install debian in my laptop after usin the parameters linux video=vga16:off to avoid the white screen just when the drive started to read the cd. After install debian, lilo let my choose win or linux. I choose linux and the the anoying white screen became again :( ..
