You simply create a initrd with another fs except carmfs i.e. ext2,
romfs, etc. which is supported by the initrd loader.

That is all well and good but where is this cramfs patch? It
definitely does not exist in the kernel-patch package and if you look
for the lines that need to be changed they already are in vanilla
kernels greater than 2.6.1. Is this is not moot then for newer
kernels.

Don't know the ins & outs of cramfs support, I built a dpkg from sources
( kernel.org'd 2.6.10 + acpi.sf.net + ipw2200.sf.net ) using:
fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd
and it works fine.

True, and I was the one who told him. However it wasn't clear to me
that he was using make

Given that Pollywog's already been told to use make-kpkg, that would be
redundant :-) (ie, make-kpkg always does a mak

Oh okay, perhaps make-kpkg is just handling things for me in the
background. Because it just seems to work. *shrug*

This is perhaps the case with 2.4 kernel. 2.6 kernels

I had to disable
3dlabs GMX 2000 (CONFIG_GAMMA)
in order to compile kernel.org 2.6.10 using Debian's .config.

Well, that's not exactly true.. make-kpkg will happily create an initrd
for you. apt-get install kernel-package

Has anyone tried to compile a kernel newer than 2.6.8 and failed due to some
gamma_drv or gamma_drm error? I have seen a few posts in which people say
they compiled their own kernel so there must be a way of getting around that
gamma_drm problem. I have compiled 2.6.8 kernels but with more rec
