As I am running (creeping) X with 4 MB (486/25/4 Highscreen Handy) I use
wm2.
I think there is a more (maybe the most) minimalistic windowmanager called
'lwm' (light window manager) - but maybe too minimalistic.

considerably faster on the 16MB machine than on the 8MB machine, so if you can

I currently use blackbox, and previously have used windowmaker - I'm not
entirely sure which one will perform best on a low end system, but both
should be quite adequate. blackbox and windowmaker are both pretty
featureful while still being quite speedy and minimalist.
