flash is known to be flakey.
Try a manual filesystem check.

which kernel? (uname -a)
which hardware? (lspci)
what harddisk? (hdparm -I /dev/sda)
have you tried a different cable?
is the harddisk making unusual noise?

I bought a USB flash drive about a week ago, plugged it in. I (re)compiled the
kernel to support usbdevfs and SCSI support. I mounted it fine and installed
backup-manager for a daily backup.
It worked ok for about 4 days and now, when
