to get USB 2.0 working on the Travelmate 800, you need to load both ehci
and uhci modules. The USB-mouse then uses /dev/input/mice and the
touchpad uses /dev/psaux.

It's probably way off base, but are you sure that you have an ehci USB
bus? When troubleshooting USB on my machines I usually compile up UHCI
and OHCI as modules and try each one, one at a time.

I have an Acer Travelmate 800 laptop,
I'm running Woody, on kenel 2.6.4 and I have have problems with my USB
mouse.
Hotplug doesn't start it at boot time (even with /etc/init.d/hotplug
restart).
It is an optical mouse, so I can see that the red light remains off.
