Thanks very much! I made some more progress in the weekend. I can login
as normal user after I deleted the .xsession file in the user's home
dir. I think I made a big mess when I was upgrading X. Hopefully, it
works now and my system hasn't hanged up till now.

I haven't tried Xfree86 4.0.1 on my laptop yet. I'm waiting for the deb
package, so the big hassle should be taken out
