this usually means that your X-Server hasn't come up (probably not configured
correctly) and that your window-manager can't find a working X-Server to
connect to...

i had this problem with boot floppies 2.2.12.
the problem were wrong access rights for /dev/null /dev/ptmx
/dev/pty?? etc.
