Did you try to use ATI drivers, instead of Generic driver ?
If ur card is listed in the following page

you should probably tryout their drivers.

But the generic
yours look just like mine... except that you have to add the driver to
the device section... see my .XF86Config:

Identifier "VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8378 [S3 UniChrome]

Driver "vesa" # that's what I use... I have to change
