I don't have a dell, but I do use X4 and an Ati-mobility.
Note that in my X4 setup, I didn't need any modeline settings like I did in x3.
X4 detected everything. Here's my XF86Config
btw, with X4, try XFree86 --configure, then look in your root home dir for an
XF86Config.new. Try using that

free to download. Time limited trial version, but you can reinstall them over
and over until a free driver becomes available.
