With Alsa, during initialisation, the volume is set on "mute".
That's why you can't hear anything.
try to launch an alsa mixer.
(like gamix)

With 2.6.x you need to enable the PC speaker as an "input device":
CONFIG_INPUT_PCSPKR=m
(or Y to link it statically into the kernel)
I built it as a module and also had to add pcspkr to /etc/modules.
