Well, I have neither phdisk.exe on CD set supplied with notebook, nor
special partition created on factory. I tried to crea

I have a Vaio F560 and I can hibernate/suspend just fine. My kernel
config is identical/similar to that

Yes, the Sony Vaio works in hibernation mode if you configure the kernel proberly.
I have a Sony Vaio SR5K, which I just took out of supend/hibernation mode.
No special partition needed for supend mode:
debian:/usr/src/linux# df -h

No, I was not referring to laptops that do this at the BIOS level (I am aware
that there are machines that do this). Also, I was under the impression that
these machines hibernate in response to the 'suspend' command. Am I mistaken?
My point was that W2K does this no matter what it is running o

You have to add : "for this specific notebook", maybe?
Because friend of mine have quite old dell powerbook (dont remember exact
model), which handle hybernate on BIO

The only project I know is the ACPI4Linux (Advanced Configuration and Power
Interface).
From the site

it is possible to download an acpi daemon. Don't know if

ISTR there was/is a project to do this:

Two of them. The Linux ACPI work will eventually support hibernation,
but no time soon. (Not before sometime in the 2.5 kernels.)
There's a patch called
It is my understanding that hibernation functionality is specific to Windoze
2000 (i.e., it is provided at the OS level).
It would be useful to have this functionality in Linux as well, not only for
laptops, but also for desktop machines that weren't desgined for this sort of
thing (e.g., the sys
