Ok, I have gone ahead and recompiled my kernel per the page that was linked. I enabled the devfs support in menuconfig. After compile, and dpkg install and reboot, I try the make install for the hermes driver and it gives me the same error.
Is there any way for me to verify that devfs is indee

well you will have to kompile your kernel, since debian normally runs
without it, but be warned...
you will have to modify a few setting for it to work, for example
/etc/fstab...

I am still trying to compile the CVS version of the hermesap drivers. when I 'make install' it gave the missing modversions.h error, after I downloaded the kernel-headers then it went further, now I get
"orinoco.c:411: warning: #warning Warning no devfs support enabled
orinoco.c:412: warnin

Ok, after downloading the kernel headers and creating a symbolic link, I have made it past that point.
Now I need devfs support. How do I go about installing a kernel with devfs support?
