I have ES1983S Meastro 3i audio chip. I used ALSA driver with 2.2.18
kernel and I can use the maestro3 and ac97_codec modules with 2.4.3
kernel.

I think you need new ALSA drivers for the 2.4.x kernel.

I also have a Dell Latitude CPx. I'm running kernel 2.2.18 and I use the ALSA
drivers and utilities (and the libraries, but I don't really use them). I
simply followed the ALSA instructions and it works fine. I have the following
lined added to my /etc/modules.conf :
## Alsa Sound
alias char
