the only way I see to use the entire LCD screen is to change your resolution:
if you are using 640x480; try to switch to 1024x768 or even 1280x1024
(depending on your screen)

Hmmm, are you using Debian 3.0r2 or testing (they're different)?
I run Debian stable on my Satellite A20. The Trident CyberAlladin-P4
chipset used in this machine isn't supported by anything earlier than
XFree86 4.3. This version is a lot more recent than that included in
Woody.

A save way is to use the hardware detection of a Knoppix-CD and copy those
found parameters in your xf86config file.
