Yes alsa defaults all sounds channels to mute. I believe the logic is
that if you set it to any other value it might be /really/ loud. For
instance if you had your speakers turned up to 100%

It's not really KMix that does this but alsa. Alsa mutes all channels by
default. Can throw you off the first couple of times you install a new
system.

To me, it sound like you're trying to play some audio file from within KDE
using some direct interface like /dev/dsp or /dev/dsp0. However, by default,
KDE enables artsd, which locks the sound card. Try `artsplay '?
I could be wrong, but this was my first thought.

Try installing the alsa modules (search for them with synaptic or apt-get), or
better yet, if you installed Woody, try upgrading the kernel to the 2.4.27...
that is what fixed the sound for me.
