Thanks! That was just what I needed. What ended up working was adding the
model=acer to /etc/modprobe.d/sound.

I initially installed etch 4.0r3 that ships with the 2.6.18 kernel. That
kernel doesn't support my NIC nor my audio hardware. I obtained the source
for the NIC drivers and manually built them. That worked fine but I couldn't
get it to detect my audio hardware. After fighting with it for most of the
