If this were the problem, it would get configured (high beeps) but actually
misbehave (poor connectivity, flaky connections) but probably actually work
if in 10 mode.

For CardBus card, you may find a gold strip at the connecting end of
your card. It's the only difference between R2 card and Cardbus card in
shape.

I have two laptops:
An old 486sx Toshiba Satellite T1900 and a newer CTX EzBook P166. I
