Just read your /etc/gdm/gdm.conf once more. There should be a section like
this:
[servers]
0=/usr/bin/X11/X vt7
# this second line starts up :1 on vt8
1=/usr/bin/X11/X vt8
I think that there is a # in front of the last line. Just remove it and
