Versa DaLite sublaptop

I have a nec versa l(Model starting with VUR) and I can not get the screen to lighten.    I can see the icons on the screen but not well.   I was told that some models are for outside use only.   My model says Versa Dalite on the equipment but on the underside where it gives the model number
