i also have a c 410c laptop, i think the problem here
is that you are keeping the floppy disk while you boot
it up, or you have no hard drive.

twice the RAM for swap and the rest as one LVM PV under which I put all
the rest. (/usr, /var, /home, ...)

implausible that a new user would go to these
lengths --- indeed RedHat 5.1 installation asks if your CD is local,
then load a module it calls bpcd and attaches it to /dev/hdd. Is this
hardware so non-standard that Debian doesn't expect neophytes to be
installing from it?
