I forgot to mention some possibly important specs:
kernel 2.6.12 to 2.6.14 ( i use different ones)
sl-modem 2.9.9d7
slmodem.
2. messed with /etc/ppp/options although I don't know what I am doing here and could have done more harm than good ( - though it hardly matter as it worked poorly before and still does :-)).

Thank you both Koen and Rob for the help. Rob it was iptables
that was messing me up. I don't know how to properly use a
firewall like that. After I removed it I have no problem using
the internet after putting the cable in after boot. Although I
will have to find a way of protecting this compu

The laptop has dhcp3-common, dhcpd, dhcp3-client, laptop-net (which I am not using presently) installed.
