thanks for the comments and help. firstly, as far as i can tell no
/dev/dsp0 or similar is made...so unfortunately the problem won't be solved
with a symlink.
secondly:
You should not have to create anything in /dev, but I have often had to
chmod 666 /dev/snd/* /dev/ami* /dev/adsp* to let

For example, on startup cd player works perfectly, but XMMS does not (on
