copy /etc/X11/XF86Config to your root dir: /root
If you're trying it as user.. copy /etc/X11/XF86Config to your user
directory: /home/username
then try to start X (startx) again.
I had the same problem, after I've done that it worked..

I dist-upgraded a potato laptop to woody last night and the pcmciaservices
refuse to start under the kernel-image-2.4.18 packages, i have matching
pcmcia-modules package installed.
I get an error when it tries to load the i82365.o module:

how this is done, the only thing I know by heart is that the parameter
single boots into single user mode (and maybe you can "abuse" this for
you minimal configuration -- no daemons, no anything).
