suspending, I'd like something "similar" that would allow it to update

aliasing an interface:
ifconfig IF:XX new_settings up
as in:
(eth0 already configured)
ifconfig eth0:0 192.168.2.1 network 192.168.2.255 broadcast 255.255.255.0 up
this will have eth0 as the usual interface, and eth0:0 pointing to the
same hardware nic, but with different network settings.

gelog (where version
information seems to be stored) adding a new section at the top, and
simply launched
dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc -b
(-us and -uc mean that I didn't want dpkg-buildpackage to sign the debs)
This command runned ok, and there it was, I got the ../pcmcia_cs*.deb

swapped-out pages on the disk. Thus the computer can be used before all
pages are back into physical memory (and for most desktop apps, needless
to say, again, that working with some disk access in the background from
times to times gives no trouble).

this can add full hibernation to older laptops

Well, you still need enough swap space to hold all your physical memory.
But it does work, even for older laptops (and especially for those,
because they usually contain no hardware that cannot be properly resumed
by swsusp).
